Happy Independence Day! Did you know? Predating the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the establishment of Washington, District of Columbia, Georgetown was founded in 1751 and served as an independent municipality until the United States Congress created a new consolidated government for the District of Columbia. Although Georgetown was not officially a city, the community was referred to as the “City of Georgetown” in several 19th-century Acts of Congress. In 1790, Robert Peter served as Georgetown’s first mayor. Peter lived at the multi-generational Washington family estate Tudor Place, whose signature line is “America’s Story Lives Here.” As Georgetowners, we are part of America’s story – both past, present, and future. At the Citizens Association of Georgetown, historic preservation remains part of our founding and lasting mission.
